We’ve updated our Shipping & Trade Protection Policies to better outline the shared responsibilities of trading on LS, and how we can realistically support our community as a small, growing platform devoted to circular abundance and building intentional closets.
These changes are based on our community’s feedback, and aim to bring more clarity, accountability, and peace of mind to every trade.

👁️ Trade Protection Ethos
Whether it’s your first trade or your 50th, swapping items feels like magic — and our goal is to help keep it that way! Trading isn’t just about adding an item to your closet, it’s about creating circular abundance in our lives and communities.
But sometimes packages get lost, items are damaged in transit, or in rare cases an item is misrepresented. Our Trade Protection policy is an additional layer of support, advocacy, and peace of mind that we offer as an option on all trades shipped in-app. Sustainers get this perk on all trades shipped in-app, non-Sustainers are able to purchase it as needed.
📢 Trading and the circular economy are new paradigms of consumption for most folks. Trading requires more trust and communication than a traditional currency-for-goods commercial transaction, and we believe that’s what makes it so special and unique. Lucky Sweater is the only community platform that facilitates 1:1 trading at scale, and we’re learning as we build this space together.
A reminder that Trade Protection is not a return policy — it’s additional support for our one-of-a-kind trading community.
🛡️ Trade Protection Policy
📢 When you agree to a trade, you are responsible for your item until your Trade Partner receives it, and vice versa. Trading is a two-way street where both Trade Partners take equal ownership of the shipping process until both traded items are safe and sound in their new closets.
💞 Lucky Sweater is a trading platform, not a retailer, so while we are unable to offer refunds for items that get lost or damaged in transit, what we can offer is our time, energy, and advocacy to help make things right when insured items are lost or damaged in transit, or in the rare case that an item is misrepresented by your Trade Partner.
🤝 Trading takes trust and some appetite for risk — and while most trades go smoothly, sometimes the unexpected happens. That’s where Trade Protection comes in!
What Trade Protection is:
- An additional support service offered by LS, intended to be used in tandem with accurately insuring your trade value for maximum coverage.
- End-to-end claim handling and priority support available as an add-on for any trade shipped using our integrated in-app service.
- Complimentary on all Sustainer trades shipped in-app, and available to purchase for $2.99 per trade if you’re not yet a Sustainer.
What Trade Protection is NOT:
- A return policy. We cannot reimburse you if your item arrives not as expected, or if it’s lost or damaged in transit. If you’re looking for full secondhand retail value compensation, we recommend insuring the full monetary value of your trade via carrier insurance.
- Item Insurance. That’s a separate thing — that we’re excited to now offer in-app! We’re updating our Shipping Policy to include up to $100 of insurance on all trades shipped in-app, and you can now purchase additional insurance as well — all without leaving LS. Shipping in-app is easier and safer because it’s the only way we can step in if something goes wrong in transit.
Example: Let’s say the item you’re trading is valued at $50, if you use in-app shipping your item will be fully covered for $50, no extra insurance needed.
👉🏼 Trade Protection Coverage
📢 Trade Protection is only available for trades shipped using labels paid for and created via our in-app shipping service. In-app shipping is how we track your trade, verify shipping details, and have the necessary info to step in and help if needed.
What does Trade Protection Cover?
- We handle all claims related to your lost or damaged item, from start to finish. This means we contact the shipping carrier, file the necessary claims including item price comps, and manage the insurance claim process end-to-end until you are reimbursed for the insured value of your traded item.
- If for some reason the insurance claim filed by LS for your item is denied by the shipping carrier, we will compensate you for the insured value of your item, up to $250.
- Priority support and mediation for trading issues within the app.
- Facilitating trade-backs in the rare case that an item is significantly misrepresented. We’ll mediate communication and cover the return shipping both ways if a “trade back” is required, so both parties get their original items back.
What is not covered?
- Items that don’t fit
- Items that you decide you don’t like IRL
- Trader’s Remorse — that’s the beauty of trading and sharing circular closets, re-list what doesn’t serve you back into the trade-o-sphere!
What does it mean to have an item arrive that was misrepresented?
- Incorrect details were provided in the item listing (brand, size, measurements, or color are inaccurate)
- Condition is significantly different than described
- Item arrives with flaws that were not disclosed in the item listing (description or photo) and significantly change the condition and value of the item
